A Decidedly non-Filofax Recipe Binder

Many Philofaxers have mentioned the use of an A5 or personal Filofax as a recipe binder. I *love* that idea--in theory.  I even bought a used A5 red Domino for this very purpose as a leather binder would be doomed in my busy kitchen. I feed 6 people 3 squares a day plus snacks. Every. Single. Day. But, I cringe at the thought of a precious Filofax in my kitchen and open to a recipe as a I bake or cook. No, I am not a complete slob (really), but I hate to think of oil, batter, eggs, water, etc. being splashed upon the recipe pages and/or the binder. And while the exterior of the Domino is hearty, the interior is delicate in terms of goop tolerance.

So, what am I to do? Well, I found this other binder at Barnes and Noble on clearance and I thought, $7 USD? Roughly the same size as an A5? Nice card stock inserts and tabs? Sold.

Ok, so this IS a little cutesy for my liking. It's a coated cardboard 3 ring binder this is relatively splash proof. The binder lays perfectly flat when opened, and the inside left cover lists baking substitutions. The  inside right features a metric conversion chart.
100 double-sided recipe cards included--nice, heavy paper, too.

Tabs are organized and easy to read. Well, all except for the "desserts" tab  I failed
 to capture clearly.

All tabbed dividers are 4-color and have additional information for each tabbed recipe area: appetizers, main dishes,  grilling, side dishes, cookies and desserts. I like that "cookies" gets its own tab!

In addition to two full page transparent splash guards (flyleaves), there are 6  vinyl sleeves
to protect clippings or whatever else I plop in there for safe keeping.

Here is an A5 Filofax divider next to this new binder for hole placement comparison purposes.
So, the cutesy cover aside, I think I did well for the price.  I will use these cards for the family favorites that I do not have committed to memory, and format, print, and include additional recipes found online. I especially like this binder's organization and its placement of additional, pertinent information on each tab. Tabs are double-sided as well.  Thanks for reading!

  2. You could so learn to cook! It is much easier and short-term rewarding than a dissertation. ;)
